There are many benefits of chlorophyll and many ways in which to incorporate chlorophyll into your diet. A diet rich in leafy greens is a great source of chlorophyll. You can also purchase health supplements in both pill and liquid chlorophyll forms.

What is Chlorophyll?

Chlorophyll is the pigment in plants and algae that is responsible for their green color, and it also plays a major role in the process of photosynthesis. Outside of this, some believe that there are health benefits to chlorophyll, whether the pigment is consumed via fruits and vegetables or as a health food supplement.

A compound found in chlorophyll, known as sodium-copper-chlorophyllin, is believed by some to provide antioxidant benefits, delaying the signs of aging and protecting the body and it’s organs from oxidation and free radicals. This same compound is also believed by some to fight off certain types of cancer, including mouth and liver cancers.

Some studies also indicate that the benefits of chlorophyll may extend to protecting the healthy cells in a person’s body as they undergo traditional cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Generally, cancer treatments do not discern against healthy cells and tumors, killing off both.

In addition to this, some dieticians and researchers also theorize that, due to the similarities between hemoglobin (found in human blood) and chlorophyll, the supplement can help your body to transport oxygen, taking some strain off the cardiovascular system.

Despite all of these theorized benefits, science has yet to confirm anything concretely, and many believe that the only purpose of chlorophyll is to help plants obtain nutrients from the water, air, and sun. Outside of being used as a color additive in processed foods, chlorophyll is readily available in green vegetables, fruits, and in the supplement isle, and it can be a part of an otherwise healthy diet.

Regardless of what you believe, there seems to be enough positive evidence to make chlorophyll a very popular health supplement. One of the more interesting ways to take advantage of the possible liquid chlorophyll benefits is by adding it to water, a juice, or smoothie recipe. Liquid chlorophyll has an interesting sweetness that can compliment many green drink recipes. Sometimes liquid chlorophyll is combined with mint so when you add it to water can create a great tasting green drink.

Whether you plan to take advantage of the chlorophyll heath benefits associated with getting it from a diet rich in dark leafy greens or if you purchase it as a liquid or tablet supplement from the store, it’s a simple way to be proactive with your health.
