From over-the-counter to prescription drugs, there are countless medications available to help people deal with stress. However, recent studies have shown that certain foods may have the same calming effects.

A recent Japanese study based on over 42,000 participants, nearly 3,000 of which suffered from diagnosed psychological stress, found that drinking five cups of green tea every day could reduce stress by 20%. While this benefit hasn’t been linked to any one specific compound found in green tea, these findings are impressive. A 20% reduction in stress is enough to go from being unable to sleep to easily distracting yourself from stressful situations in which nothing can be done.

If you’ve exhausted green tea smoothies, iced green tea, or other variations, there are several other foods that can also lower stress as well. Certain nuts, such as almonds, pistachios, and walnuts, contain vitamin B, magnesium, and zinc, which have been proven to reduce anxiety. Broccoli, which contains high levels of B vitamins, as well as dried apricots, which are also rich in magnesium, can also have similar effects. In addition to these foods, researchers believe that the high antioxidant levels found in blueberries may help to improve one’s overall sense of well-being.
When it comes to lowering stress naturally, recent studies have found that there is a natural food option for just about everyone, no matter
what their tastes. So switch your coffee out for green tea, drink iced green tea with lunch and dinner, and add in these other stress-fighting foods at each meal so that you can go about life calmly and with composure, no matter what situation you’re in.
