Vitamin D Supporting Weight Loss

With so many weight loss fads coming and going, you might be pleasantly surprised to learn that by just spending a little more time in the sun each day to increase your bodies natural Vitamin D production is all it might take to help you start reaching your weight loss goals.

Vitamin D has been getting a lot of attention in the medical industry lately for preventing a large range of health challenges. In fact when you go to the doctor with certain health challenges don’t be surprised if your doctor instructs you to get your vitamin D levels checked, and if he doesn’t, request it!

Vitamin D and Weight Loss

The latest buzz around Vitamin D is the slimming benefits many studies are showing for your waistline.

A recent study presented at the Endocrine Society’s Annual meeting in Washington D.C. showed that Vitamin D levels in the blood at the start of a low-calorie diet predicted weight loss success. For each ng/mL (nanogram/ milliliter) increase in vitamin D precursor in the blood, subjects on their calorie-restricted diet ended up losing almost a half-pound more. Additionally, higher baseline Vitamin D levels predicted greater loss of abdominal fat.

A very interesting association between Vitamin D levels and obesity has been repeatedly noted in multiple studies as well as in broad observational research. Basically, the lower your vitamin D levels, the more you weigh; the higher your vitamin D levels, the less you weigh.

Though this does not by itself show causation, a recent study done by Dr. Selehpour of the Tehran University of Sciences found that in a study involving 77 overweight women, in just 12 weeks, the woman given just 1,000 IU/day of Vitamin D, lost five more pounds than the control group given a placebo.

Vitamin D might not be the silver bullet if you are not also supporting your weight loss efforts with diet and exercise, but it certainly shows promise for supporting your goals if you are taking an active and healthy role in managing your weight.

So next time you are inclined to take a walk, get some healthy Vitamin D producing sunshine in your diet at the same time. At the very least, walk to your local health food store and purchase a bottle vitamin D capsules. Your waistline might just thank you for it!
