Smoothies are a health and weight loss item that allow for maximum nutrition and taste at the same time. The primary difference between a smoothie and a simple juice is the fact that smoothies are thicker, richer, and more satisfying as a snack or meal. Smoothies are excellent methds of obtaining natural vitamins, minerals, andanti-oxidants to fight aging and help improve weight loss.

Proper smoothie recipes will have five main ingredients. Any recipe worth having will be certain to include each of these in some manner, or the recipe itself is doomed to fail. These component ingredients are a base, fruit, liquid, flavoring and additives.

The base is usually yogurt of some type. The base is the most important aspect of a smoothie. Any other component might be left out, but without a base the smoothie will simply be juice with chunks of material floating in it. There are other base ingredients outside of yogurt. However, yogurt is the most common in healthy smoothies.

Fruit can be any type of fruit imaginable. Some combinations go well together, while others might not. The fun of smoothie recipes is to determine exactly which types go well together.

The liquid can be anything from water, to milk, to alcohol. Healthfood and weight loss related smoothies tend to skip the alcoholic addition, however. Fresh juice is often combined at this point if people do not wish to add fruit chunks.
